Coming up to the point where it is old news now, but in an interview in Africa the Pope has said that he believes condoms are only exacerbating the AIDS epidemic in Africa. I was perplexed when I read this. What does everyone else think?

I actually have no idea what that is supposed to mean. How the hell did he reach that conclusion? This is the problem with Popes. By the time they become Pope, they are so old and have very little of their mind left. I know what his solution would be. "GAS THEM ALL!"

Exactly, the statement has no scietific merit to it at all. I know Religion and Science aren't the best of friends, but to ignore the bleedingly obvious is ludicrous. The only thing I think he could have meant is that the quality of them are shit, hence they shouldn't be used at all. The obvious retort to this is shouldn't we just give them decent ones...

You can walk into sex clinics here an pick up enormous handfuls of them for free. Same with chlamydia. Oops, I mean chlamydia testing kits. There is this leisure centre just outside Leeds. You talk up the steps and right in front of you are two huge crates - one blue, one pink, both full to bursting point with chlamydia testing kits. Pink for girls, blue for boys. Or it might be pink for homosexuals, blue for heterosexuals. Either way, that's how society is these days.
Anyway, the pope is no scientist. Condoms are seen as against the whole Catholic religion really. That's what you hear people say they come from a large family. Whenever anyone says that...you KNOW they are Catholic, because the parents couldn't be fucked to wear a condom because the Pope says it's not alright.

The reasoning behind his stupidity is that they don't know how to use them, they are poor quality, and because they have access to condoms, they are more likely to have sex, thereby increasing the chance that STD's will be transmitted.
It's just such stupid reasoning, but like Matt said, he is a senile old coot.
